March Newsletter February 2011 already and weve had news of another Christchurch earth quake, the news is devastating and they just dont seem to be able to get a break down there. I guess all we can do from the outside is to offer any assistance/donations where possible. Since our last update in August last year the race season has started and all the car shows, rod runs etc are in full swing and work has been busy with a huge variety of cars coming through the doors, from Formula Firsts to Trans-Ams and a 1938 Buick to a 1966 Pontiac. |

| Having finished the Motorsport NZ homologated rollcage and totally stripping the car after it was fully mocked up we adapted a 1st Gen Camaro rottisery to Dave Bests Corvette chassis and it is currently at Steve Jones from the Deuce Farm getting the fibreglass floors refitted to suit the chassis and race seat mods, the firewall smoothed and filled where required and the body all nicely fitted around the roll cage footings. All the original silver paint has been left intact and just the underbody/bonnet blackened, all suspension pieces, hardware, exhaust and fabricated bracketry have been Pro-coated or Zinc/nickel treated and the car is now ready for final assembly. | |||||||

Gary and Tina Walker from Matamatas Quad-Stang is coming along nicely although probably not as fast as they would have liked due to my work load. The Vintage Air heater-box/AC unit has been installed and plumbed to the firewall. The fuel system is all but done with dual EFI fuel pumps, filter and custom surge tank all fabbed, mounted and plumbed in. The lines front to rear have been run and the new fuel sender unit has been modified as required. The custom twin 2.5inch exhaust system is finished, there was a lot of work in this with tight clearances around the 6 speed trans and wanting to run a decent size balance pipe. Also with the 5-link rear end and a low desired ride height getting the tailpipes, that size, right to the back was also a bit of a mission but they have come out great. The Sparco seats have been mounted, this also was a bit of work as the customers wanted to get them as low as possible. Gary and Tina wanted a floor-mount handbrake between the seat and the console so weve done that also. We have converted the rear brakes to Wilwood Discs and up-specd the calipers to match the front calipers. And lastly we have just finished the handbrake cable mechanism to connect the floor mount lever to the disc rear-end. Again with large tailpipes and a low 5-link rear-end this proved to be a bit of a mission, but its done, with cable adjusters and ratio adjustments as required. Next will be fitting a new engine plenum (air intake) that has just been released in Australia, its way cool as the attached pics show, so from there we will be using a twin throttle body then fabricate an air intake. Next we will be sorting through seat belt types and their respective anchorages and going through the rear suspension. This suspension was bolted-in (before the car came to us) as a kit from the States and is far from ideal, it would probably be fine for drag racing and running on nice smooth California highways but would be tragic on our NZ roads. We will be putting solid chassis spacers in where there are none and installing some more compliant arm bushings/rod-ends to cure this. |

| We have been lucky enough to have two of Burt Watchorns (from Awakeri) Buicks in the shop for tune-up work, both straight-8s, a 38 coupe & a 39 Convertible. Beautiful old cars from an era most of us would gladly trade for the hectic lifestyles we have today. | |||||||

| Grant Smith has had his mint 1966 Pontiac Parisian 2-door hardtop in for a long list of detail work, squeaks and rattles, oil leaks, some chrome and under-bonnet detailing work, fitting a coolant header tank and suspension and brake work. They made these cars long and solid and as low as it sits the suspension arms are now working through angles they were not designed to, so we are constantly watching the suspension ball joints/bushes and brakes. Grant is keen to make contact with any other owners of these cars around the country so just email us and we can join the dots. | |||||||

| Paul Stubber in his rapid 1969 Camaro has dropped back to 3rd, from 1st in the Central Musclecar Championship after a big crash at Pukekohe, a few driveline issues at Hampton and another small altercation at Manfield. Hes hoping for a clean- reliable run for the last two meetings of the season at Hampton and Taupo at Easter. | |||||||

| John Rae is currently 3rd in the NZGT1 championship, weve had a bad run with electrical gremlins which cost us some speed at Pukekohe and we had a broken throttle cable at Manfield, so once again, 2 meetings left to try and consolodate our points. | |||||||

| Im just going through the design and price stage on Christian Hillarys 67 SS RS big block Camaro (my old car) to air-bag it, 20 x 12 rims, huge brakes, Stubber style bullet proof 12-bolt diff, and chassis/subframe connectors so will try and get pics through on that shortly. | |||||||
